Police Firing Case kerala | Kerala High Court Orders CBI Probe:
The Kerala High Court today directed the state government to handover to CBI the investigation into the police firing on a violent crowd of IUML activists on Nov 15 last year in which one person was killed.
The direction was issued by Justice V Ramkumar on a petition by M K Mustaffa Haji, father of 23-year-old Mohammed Shafeeq, who was killed allegedly in the police firing.
The court also directed the state government to pay Rs five lakh as compensation to the petitioner within three months. The incident took place during a reception to IUML leaders.
According to the petitioner, Kasaragod SP, Ramdas Pothen, had without any provocation snatched a pistol from his gunman and fired at the crowd. Police contended that the crowd had turned violent. Cases were registered against 500 IUML workers for attacking police and destroying public property.
Despite the allegations in the writ petition, it was unfortunate that the investigation was not entrusted to an officer higher in rank, the court held. Justice Ramkumar clarified that it shall be within the discretion of CBI to conduct a fresh investigation or to continue the police probe. The state government should extend all facilities to the CBI, the court held.
