Mathieu Dandenault | Former NHL Star Mathieu Dandenault Officially Retires From NHL:

Mathieu Dandenault, the versatile defenseman who won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings and later played for the Montreal Canadiens, has retired.

Dandenault, 34, last played in the NHL in 2008-09 with Montreal. Last season, he joined Hartford of the American Hockey League, but was sidelined by a tear in his groin and opted to leave the team in March.

Dandenault, selected by Detroit in the second round of the 1994 NHL draft, had 68 goals and 135 assists in 868 career games.

”A couple of teams invited me to camp but I said no,” said Dandenault, who also played forward. ”I’m comfortable with my decision. It was a childhood dream to play in the NHL and having had the opportunity to play for two Original Six franchises made it even more special.”

He spent his first nine seasons in Detroit, where he won Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002, and then played his final four years with the Canadiens. Dandenault also played on the Canadian team that won a world championship in 2003.

Nikolai Khabibulin | Nikolai Khabibulin Leads Edmonton Oilers In 8-2 Win Over Vancouver Canucks:

Nikolai Khabibulin made 26 saves, rookie Jordan Eberle had two goals and an assist, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks 8-2 in a preseason game Sunday.

Shawn Horcoff and Dustin Penner also scored twice, and Chris Vande Velde(notes) and Linus Omark had the other goals for the Oilers (3-0-0).

Manny Malholtra and Ryan Kesler scored for the Canucks (1-4-0).

Khabibulin was making his first start since suffering a string of setbacks, starting with a season-ending back injury last November. He was also convicted last month of drunken driving and excessive speeding in a Scottsdale, Ariz., suburb last February.

CWG 2010:Australian Athletes Team Arrive in Delhi for CWG:

The first batch of Australian athletes for the Commonwealth Games arrived here early this morning hoping to remain unaffected by the troubled build-up to the event.

Australia’s lawn bowls team landed in the Indian capital in the wee hours this morning.

“Who’d have thought lawn bowls would lead Australia into battle?” said one of the team members.

They are well aware of the criticism that has engulfed the Games Village but the Aussies said they would not form an opinion before having a look at it themselves.

“We’ve heard reports but we’d like to see for ourselves.

We’re going in without expectations and what we see is what we get,” said another player.

“There’s a fair bit of pressure, but we’re pretty confident,” she said.

Later today, Australia’s netball and gymnastics teams will also land here for the October 3 to 14 event.

Juan Ignacio Chela | Juan Ignacio Chela Claims Bucharest Double‎:

Juan Ignacio Chela completed a perfect week at the BCR Open in Bucharest by adding the singles title to his victory in Saturday’s doubles final.

The fourth-seeded Argentinian dug deep to take a hard-fought opening set against Spain’s Pablo Andujar before easing clear in the second to post a 7-5 6-1 triumph in 88 minutes.

The victory marks the world number 53’s second title of the year and sixth of his career, and comes just a day after the 31-year-old won the doubles crown alongside Lukasz Kubot.

“It was an unbelievable week winning in both singles and doubles. I didn’t expect that,” Chela said.

Chela did not have it all his own way against world number 105 Andujar, who was making his first appearance in an ATP final.

The 24-year-old Spaniard forced two breaks of Chela’s serve in the opener but was broken on three occasions himself as the greater experience of his opponent told.

Two further breaks of the Andujar serve were sufficient for Chela to take the second set and the match at a canter.

Gilles Simon | Gilles Simon Beats Mischa Zverev To Win Open De Moselle:

Gilles Simon of France easily beat qualifier Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday to win the Open de Moselle and clinch his seventh career title.

Simon, who won his last title on hard courts at Bangkok in October last year, made quick work of beating Zverev in 1 hour, 7 minutes.

Simon had earlier beaten Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany by the same score in only 54 minutes in their semifinal and came into the final in confident mood.

“I felt I had no right to lose today, particularly after my semifinal yesterday,” Simon said. “Maybe I put myself under too much pressure after having played so well in the semifinal.”

The 155th-ranked Zverev struggled to impose himself in his first career final and was always under pressure, saving seven of 10 break points and failing to trouble Simon with his normally assured volleying game.

Simon had nine aces and won on his first match point when Zverev’s service return went out.

“I was really tense and nervous even though I was a set ahead and had numerous chances,” Simon said. “I was struggling to relax, playing in France against an opponent with his ranking, and who I was supposed to beat.”

Playing aggressively on Zverev’s serve, Simon’s attacking approach forced the German to scramble.

Although Simon berated himself near the end of the match for an unforced error, he was in total control, breaking Zverev in the fifth and seventh games of the second set and then racing to 40-0 as he served for victory.

Simon celebrated by rushing into the crowd to hug his girlfriend.

“This tournament was really perfect for me and came at the right time, because I am at a turning point in my life right now,” Simon said. “I have often heard (my girlfriend say) that I never win when she’s there, so that’s done now.”

The 25-year-old Simon hopes his form will earn him a singles spot on France’s Davis Cup team in the final against Serbia in December.

“Of course this is something close to all our hearts,” he said. “I have a title to defend next week in Bangkok.”

NFL Scores Week 3: Vikings Win Their First Game Of The Season Over Lions:

Vikings offense finally came alive. After averaging only 9.5 points per game to start the season, the Vikings scored 24 points to beat the Lions by 10.

Pittsburgh Penguins Rally  Beats Blue Jackets 5-4|Pittsburgh Penguins vs Blue Jackets:

Chris Kunitz had a goal and assist and the Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice in the third period to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in a preseason game Friday night.

Penguins star Sidney Crosby skipped the game after sitting out the third period against Detroit on Wednesday night because of a sore hip flexor. Evgeni Malkin also was out of the lineup.

Kunitz was credited with the goal after the puck caromed off two Blue Jackets players on the power play late in the second period.

Nick Johnson scored from between the circles on a power play for the winning goal at 8:13 of the third, and Mike Comrie made it 5-3 4 minutes later with a tap-in, finishing off a nice passing play.

Arron Asham and Mike Rupp also scored for Pittsburgh (2-0).

Tomas Kubalik had three goals, his third with 44 seconds left, and Kyle Wilson also scored for Columbus (1-2).

Pittsburgh’s Brent Johnson allowed three goals on 21 shots, playing the first two periods. The Blue Jackets’ Mathieu Garon went the distance and made 24 save.

Philadelphia Flyers Beat Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3| Philadelphia Flyers Vs Toronto Maple Leafs:

Claude Giroux and Danny Briere scored in a shootout to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 4-3 exhibition victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night.

Nikolai Zherdev had two goals and Danny Briere also scored in regulation for the Flyers (2-0-1). Phil Kessel, Kris Versteeg and Dion Phaneuf scored for Toronto (2-1-1).

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 29 saves for Toronto, but ended up with the loss after the Maple Leafs were victimized by some strange bounces and a waived-off overtime goal that should have counted.

In overtime, Kessel batted the puck behind Michael Leighton, but the goal was disallowed because the referee thought it had gone in off his hand. There is no video review during the preseason.

But they also noted that the Spaniard is only 24 and has a long career ahead of him.

Davis Cup World Group-Belgium Beats Australia:

Steve Darcis beat Carsten Ball 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4 as Belgium rallied to beat Australia 3-2 to return to the Davis Cup World Group.

Australia led 2-1 after winning the doubles match on Saturday but lost both reverse singles matches Monday in the rain-interrupted playoff, struggling after former No. 1-ranked Lleyton Hewitt injured his wrist and had to withdraw before his last scheduled match.

Hewitt, who won his opening singles match and injured his hand as he helped win the doubles, was replaced by Peter Luczak in a singles match that started Sunday and finished Monday.

Olivier Rochus beat Luczak 7-6 (8), 6-4, 6-7 (0), 7-6 (2) to level the playoff at 2-2 before Darcis clinched it for Belgium, ensuring 28-time champion Australia would languish in the Asia-Oceania regional group for a fourth consecutive year.

It was an impressive comeback for Darcis, who missed the opening singles match and doubles with an injured shoulder.

Unseasonal Spring rain in tropical far northern Australia decreased any advantage the hosts would have enjoyed from the expected heat and humidity, and also extended the best-of-five playoff over four days instead of three.

Rochus, who won his opening singles match against Ball, was level at 4-4 with Luczak on Sunday when play was postponed to Monday because of storms.

He eventually won the match in just under 4 1/2 hours to keep Belgium in the chase to secure a World Group spot for 2011.

It was not all smiles for Barcelona after clinching a 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Sep 19 as the match ended with a teary eyed Messi being carried away on a stretcher.

“The TV pictures speak for themselves. It is not only Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) who needs protecting. The referees should protect all the players,” he added.

Dimitar Berbatov’s Glorious Goal|Shows Why Manchester United Fans Love Him:

If the first of Dimitar Berbatov’s goals was as soft as they come, the second was the stuff of a striker’s dreams. And with the workmanlike third, the languid Bulgarian applied the knock-out blow to opponents who had begun to believe in their own renaissance, securing a result that may shape the season for both sides.

That second effort, though, was the one for the end-of-season highlights package. Just before the hour Berbatov had his back to goal as Nani’s cross came in from the right. Controlling it on his right thigh, he let it bounce up and then launched himself to meet it again with an overhead kick that saw the ball smack the underside of the crossbar and fall across the line in front of the ecstatic Stretford End. It was a piece of improvised athleticism of which Denis Law himself would have been proud. “I didn’t see the ball go into the net,” Berbatov said. “I just heard the noise. It was a good goal but for me it doesn’t matter if it was an overhead kick or a tap-in.” His manager was more effusive. “A fantastic strike,” Sir Alex Ferguson said. 

“It was unexpected, a surprise attempt. Not many of those go into the net. Fortunately this time it did.” According to Patrice Evra, it was the sort of thing that is often seen at United’s Carrington training ground. “I wasn’t surprised,” the full‑back said.

“He does that all the time in training.” The impact was strengthened by the fact that it was sandwiched by two more conventional goals from the sort of headers expected of a No 9. The masterpiece came from a moment of concentrated explosiveness, the sort of thing that made perfect sense of the two years of apparent strolling and loitering which had United’s fans wondering if the £30m man would ever come good. Even Ferguson, for all his encouraging remarks in yesterday’s programme notes, in which he confessed himself “thrilled” by the striker’s current form, must have wondered from time to time whether this investment would be one to write off – a Garry Birtles or a Peter Davenport rather than an Eric Cantona or a Teddy Sheringham. “Lots of questions were asked about him last season and he was made something of a whipping boy,” Ferguson wrote. “People should have queried whether the man had real ability, and the answer for me was undoubtedly ‘yes’. Next they should have looked to see if he was a Manchester United kind of player, and again I think there was no doubt about him.” No sooner had the faithful absorbed those thoughts than Berbatov emerged to demonstrate his ability to rekindle the enthusiasm of those regretting the way in which the currents of the modern game have largely swept aside the type of player capable of putting his foot on the ball and redirecting the flow with a single thoughtful flick. 

If at times he seems an almost spectral anachronism in a game where the emphasis is increasingly on speed and defending from the front, yesterday he demonstrated that the old virtues can still be piercingly relevant and, at times, decisive – at least when they are at the disposal of a player so clearly capable of blending the cerebral and the technical. This was Berbatov’s first hat-trick for Manchester United, and United’s first against Liverpool for more than 60 years. He now has six goals in five Premier League appearances this season, compared with nine from 31 league games in 2008-09 and 12 from 33 last season. There were also goals in the pre-season friendlies, and one in the Community Shield win over Chelsea. He is playing with an authority that finally justifies the huge fee which brought him from Tottenham Hotspur two years ago, reminding us that he scored 41 goals in 69 appearances for his country before creating dismay among his compatriots by calling time on his international career. If his motive was to concentrate all his efforts on redeeming himself in United’s eyes, it is certainly paying off. With Wayne Rooney still lacking sharpness, Berbatov is rising to the occasion as United strive to keep in touch with Chelsea. His first goal made a mockery of Fernando Torres’s attempt to mark him at a corner – a bizarrely misguided defensive disposition: were the situation reversed, would Ferguson ask Berbatov to mark Torres? – but for the third, from John O’Shea’s clipped cross, he comprehensively outjumped Jamie Carragher, a bona fide defender. 

“It was a magical day,” Berbatov conceded, emerging with seeming reluctance from behind his customary mask of semi-detached lugubriousness to produce something resembling an expression of satisfaction. “I’m happy because we won a very important game. It was special for me because I scored a hat-trick and we won against our rival. I don’t want it to be my last, so I’ll keep working and hopefully I’ll keep improving. Today everything was working for me and I thank my team-mates for giving me the ball.” But his laconic responses suggest that, like Cantona, he is in no need of external vindication. “I’m going home with a smile on my face,” he said, “but to my kids I’m nothing special. And tomorrow is another day.”

CLT 20:Sachin Tendulkar Praises West Indian Dwayne Bravo for Win Against RC:

Durban: Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar today heaped praise on West Indian Dwayne Bravo for his all-round effort that set the platform for the thrilling two-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in a Group B match of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament here today.


Bravo scored a 23-ball 29 and together with Saurabh Tiwary (38 not out) stitched a quickfire 64-run sixth wicket stand to take Mumbai to 165 for seven.


Bravo also came up with two crucial wickets — Robin Uthappa and Ross Taylor — during Bangalore’s innings which was instrumental in Mumbai’s narrow victory.


“Bravo brought us back both with the bat and the ball.


Bravo had a fantastic day with both bat and ball,” Tendulkar said after the victory even though it came too late as Mumbai have been knocked out the tournament on net run rate.

In a stunning turnaround, Somdev Devvarman and Rohan Bopanna powered India to the elite Davis Cup World Group by scripting a sensational 3-2 win over Brazil in the play-off tie here Sunday. Making amends for their opening-day defeats, Somdev and Bopanna downed their higher-ranked rivals in a do-or-die situation and led India to its first ever win in a Davis Cup tie from a 0-2 deficit. Sweden has the most 0-2 comeback wins in the Davis Cup history with five victories and only once a team has won a final from 0-2 scoreline when Australia defeated USA in 1939.

 A dominant Somdev led 7-6 (3) 4-0 before world number 27 Thomaz Bellucci conceded the first revesre singles, failing to negotiate hot and humid conditions and thus allowing India to level the tie 2-2. The 479th-ranked Bopanna then came out firing on all cylinders to beat 75th-ranked Ricardo Mello 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3 in the fifth rubber to complete an amazing come-from-behind win. Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi had brought India back in the tie by beating Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in the doubles rubber, yesterday.

 With their win, Lee-Hesh had take their unbeaten streak in Davis Cup to 24, the most by any doubles team in the world. India’s decision to host the tie on hard courts under trying weather conditions paid as it played an important part in turning tide in favour if India on the final day. India were forced into the play-offs after losing to Russia 2-3 in the World Group first round in Moscow in March. Brazil now have lost five consecutive play-off ties since 2006.

CLT20 2010: Mumbai Indians Beat Royal Challengers Bangalore By Two Runs:

Mumbai Indians 165 for 7 (Tiwary 38*, Steyn 3-26) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 163 for 5 (Dravid 71*, Kohli 47, Bravo 2-23) by two runs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore seemed to have out-thought, out-planned and out-executed Mumbai Indians until Anil Kumble dropped Dwayne Bravo off his own bowling in the 15th over, a catch that would have reduced Mumbai to 86 for 6. Bravo, Saurabh Tiwary and Harbhajan Singh added 79 more to the rest of the innings. Mumbai’s bowlers then just about hung in to prevail in a last-ball finish, but their team was knocked out of the tournament.

Rahul Dravid’s anchorman 71 off 58, and Virat Kohli’s 24-ball 47 that almost deserved to be on the winning side, had brought 40 off 18 down to 13 required off the last over. Zaheer Khan – a former IPL team-mate – began with two superb slower short balls, but he also missed two yorkers by a few inches. Kohli smashed those low full tosses for leg-side boundaries. Three required off the last ball. Another yorker went wrong. 

Low full toss. Kohli had done it twice, he just needed to repeat it, but the wrists turned a fraction of a second earlier. So hard had he swung, the leading edge kissed the sky and came down.

Ambati Rayudu held his nerve when a drop there would have produced a tie. Zaheer and Rayudu exulted, Kohli went down on his haunches. The man his technique is often compared to, Dravid, stood there, patted his back, consoled him, but it didn’t seem to work.

Bangalore, though, will get another chance. Mumbai won’t. In fact, the result doesn’t change the course of the tournament much. The Bangalore-Lions game still remains a knockout affair. Bangalore need to win to force a three-way tie between themselves, Lions and Mumbai for the second semi-final slot from Group B. Kohli’s late hitting, however, has made sure their net run-rate stays the best of the three, while Mumbai’s ends worst.

When it comes to the Twenty20 environment, Trinidad & Tobago can improvise on a famous saying, and claim, “If Pollard doesn’t get you, Bravo will.” Especially when Bravo is dropped when on 1. That big Mumbai finish was exactly what Bangalore were trying to avoid when they held back Dale Steyn through the first 10 overs. As far as Steyn was concerned, he executed the plan perfectly. Charged up, he responded by inflicting a three-ball duck on Kieron Pollard, bowling two overs for five runs and two wickets.

The plan did involve some risk, but the Kumars at Nos. 1 and 2 started its perfect execution. Praveen took Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket, Vinay took Rayudu’s. Shikhar Dhawan and JP Duminy then got stuck, going from nowhere to nowhere. They soon fell, setting up the much-awaited contest between Pollard and Steyn.

In came slip and a short leg. Bouncer. Ducked under. Slower ball. Missed. Length ball, extra bounce, leading edge, gone. Soon Kumble had a chance to finish Mumbai off, but he missed a return catch. Bravo thanked Kumble by hitting him for two fours in the same over, and then launching him for two sixes and a four in his next. It was clean hitting with the typical Bravo flourish.

There is a risk of understating the performance from Tiwary, who didn’t look intimidated at all, slapped a Steyn bouncer for a flat six, and followed it up with back-to-back fours. A high full toss in the 19th over ended Bravo’s 17-ball 29, but that didn’t slow Mumbai down as Harbhajan hit three boundaries to finish strongly.

Abu Nechim, the Assam seamer who was playing his first match of the tournament, started the turnaround in the chase, trapping Jacques Kallis lbw with his second ball. He managed to get movement and extra bounce from the lively Kingsmead pitch.

On a night when Lasith Malinga and Zaheer were stable at best, Bravo utilised the conditions best, following Kallis’ wicket with those of Robin Uthappa and Ross Taylor. When Harbhajan removed Cameron White with a yorker in the 14th over, leaving Dravid and Kohli needing 66 off 37, it seemed the game was over.

Neither batsman is renowned for big hitting, and with Malinga and Zaheer to bowl three overs, big hitting was what was required. Kohli was then to endure a heartbreak. Ironically, though, those three extra runs wouldn’t have mattered in the larger picture. Mumbai are still out, Bangalore still need a win.
