Yom Kippur:Israel came to a virtual standstill at sundown Friday as Jews began observing the holy day of the beginning of the Jewish calendar, 25 hours of fasting and meditation known as Yom Kippur.

While most Israelis are not religious, but Israel still shuts down during fast day. There is no TV or radio, businesses are closed and the streets are so devoid of cars, thousands of children benefit from day to ride a bike down the highway.

Police began training during the early morning, the deployment of traffic along the main highways around Jerusalem and along the northern and southern borders in an effort to prevent infiltrators from entering Israel.

Police also deployed in the mixed Arab-Jewish neighborhoods in anticipation of possible collisions. The high level of alert will be maintained on Israel to Sukkot, which will be held next week.

Many Israeli Jews who do not observe Jewish law before the end of the year will not watch TV, talk on the phone or surf the web on the fast day, even if they do not attend church services.

Life goes on, however, in cities and areas, home to one-fifth of Israelis who are Muslims and Christians.

Because of fears that Palestinian militants might carry out attacks, the Israeli military closed the transitions from the West Bank into Israel, except for the entry of Palestinians for the duration of fast day.

Such closures have become commonplace on the Jewish holidays, but the West Bank as tensions rose in recent weeks, in parallel with the launch of a new round of Middle East peace talks. Hamas militants, who threatened to derail talks with the use of violence, killed four Israeli settlers in the beginning of this month, and Israeli troops kill Hamas militant in the West Bank early Friday.
