27 September 2010 is the 12th birthday anniversary of Google and a new doodle (google logo) featuring a birthday cake and a candle has started to appear across all major versions of the world’s most popular search engine.

Google was first incorporated as a private corporation on the 27th September 1998. That’s already a long time back. Who among us here, back in 1998, thought that Google would be the giant it is today? The 12th Birthday Anniversary of Google doodle is a painting made by 89 year old Los Angeles artist Wayne Thiebaud.

The doodle represents a birthday cake with the candle representing the L in the word Google. Google doodles are now famous and it has become a sort of tradition to expect a new doodle full with creativity on each occasion which we can consider as a significant one.

The first Google doodle was used in August 1998 and was designed by Sergey Brin and Larry Page (G-founders). The doodle was for the Burning Man Festival. Since then, Google doodles is a tradition. We have hundreds of such creative doodle floating around the net and more to come. We all remember this year’s famous Pac Man doodle which enabled any Googler to play the game on Google’s homepage itself.

Well Happy Birthday Google and are we expecting any surprise feature or anything today from Big G? We’ll see this in the coming hours.

The company’s stated mission from the outset was “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”, and the company’s unofficial slogan — coined by Google engineer Paul Buchheit — is Don’t be evil. In 2006, the company moved to their current headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Google runs over one million servers in data centers around the world, and processes over one billion search requests and twenty petabytes of user-generated data every day. Google’s rapid growth since its incorporation has triggered a chain of products, acquisitions and partnerships beyond the company’s core search engine. The company offers online productivity software, such as its Gmail e-mail software, and social networking tools, including Orkut and, more recently, Google Buzz. 

Google’s products extend to the desktop as well, with applications such as the web browser Google Chrome, the Picasa photo organization and editing software, and the Google Talk instant messaging application. More notably, Google leads the development of the Android mobile phone operating system, used on a number of phones such as the Nexus One and Motorola Droid. 

Because of its popularity and numerous products, Alexa lists Google as the Internet’s most visited website. Google is also Fortune Magazine’s fourth best place to work, and BrandZ’s most powerful brand in the world. The dominant market position of Google’s services has led to criticism of the company over issues including privacy, copyright, and censorship.
